Background

Recent research indicates that the risks of nuclear weapons proliferation and use by accident, miscalculation or intent are growing, and that the humanitarian, financial and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons production and use are much greater than previously understood. The 2014 IPU resolution on the role of parliamentarians to achieve a nuclear weapons free world is thus timely and will require full implementation.

This panel will provide an update on the humanitarian dimension for nuclear weapons abolition, explore the cooperative security framework that can assist in achieving a nuclear weapons free world, and give examples of best parliamentary practice that could be emulated or further developed in order to support comprehensive and global nuclear disarmament.
