389 Members of European Parliament support Global Zero declaration

389 Members of the European Parliament - over half the parliament - have signed a Written Declaration of Support for the Global Zero Action Plan for the phased and verified elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide introduced by PNND members Tarja Cronberg MEP and Jarosław Wałęsa MEP, along with two other Members of the European Parliament (Reinhard Bütikofer, Sergio Silvestris and Janusz Zemke).

The declaration ‘Encourages the US and Russian Governments to reduce their arsenals to a total of 1 000 nuclear weapons each and to remove their tactical nuclear weapons from the European continent;’ and ‘Calls on all nuclear weapons countries to participate in multilateral negotiations on the phased and verified elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide and the establishment of a verification system that includes intrusive, unrestricted inspections.’

The declaration was initiated and promoted by Europe United for Zero, a campaign by youth leaders to build political support for the Global Zero Action Plan, in conjunction with Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.

On 14 November 2012, Europe United for Zero presented a banner of supporting signatures to members of the European Parliament at an event featuring Queen Noor of Jordan, General (ret) Bernard Norlain (Commander of French Air Defence 1990-92), Bruce Blair (Director of Global Zero) and Lawrence Bender (Producer of Countdown to Zero). The event also included a showing of the documentary Countdown to Zero.

On 6 March 2013, PNND and Global Zero organised an event in the European Parliament "Are Nuclear Weapons Necessary" featuring Ward Wilson (author of 5 Myths of Nuclear Weapons), Alyn Ware (PNND Global Coordinator), Marion Dossner (Global Zero European Coordinator) and Jaroslaw Walesa MEP. The event included the European Parliament launch of the PNND/IPU Handbook for Parliamentarians on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and the Global Zero video 'Demand Zero'.
