The side-event is being held to provide examples of already existing nuclear weapons prohibition measures which are related to the types of national implementation measures that governments and parliaments might enact following the adoption of the nuclear prohibition treaty.

These include, inter alia, the Nuclear-Free Amendment to the Philippines Constitution (1987); New Zealand Nuclear-Free Zone, Arms Control, and Disarmament Act (1987), and Federal Constitutional Act for a Non-Nuclear Austria (1999).

The development, implementation and impact of these measures can provide useful background to States and civil society in preparation for national implementation of the nuclear prohibition treaty.
