Parliamentary roundtable during the Vienna Conference

Parliamentary actions for a nuclear-weapon-free world

Austrian parliament, 9:00 – 12:00

Parliamentary roundtable during the Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons. Hosted by the Austrian Parliament. Co-sponsored by the Inter Parliamentary Union and Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.

Tuesday, December 9, 2014 | Austria, Vienna

The catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons - compounded by the risk that they could be used by accident, miscalculation or intent - reinforces the political and legal imperative to prohibit and eliminate such weapons. On the other hand, a sizeable number of States still rely on nuclear deterrence for their security. Parliamentarians have responsibilities to eliminate the role of nuclear weapons in security doctrines and to support national, regional and global initiatives to prohibit nuclear weapons and achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world. This roundtable will provide an opportunity for parliamentarians to share examples of parliamentary action, and develop ideas and strategies for further action.
