From the Doomsday Clock to the Pact for the Future: Africa, Nuclear Disarmament and the Rights of Future Generations
Online, Friday January 30. 10:30 Eastern Time USA / 16:30 West Africa Time /16:30 Central Europe Time
On 27 January 2026, the Doomsday Clock will be reset, indicating how close we are to planetary catastrophe from nuclear war, climate change, global war and other existential risks.
At our Jan 30 event we will consider implications of the new Clock setting for Africa and the world, discuss some processes and campaigns to address these issues, highlight the rights andwellbeing of future generations, and amplify the role of youth.
One of the relevant processes in 2026 is implementation of the Pact for the Future, adopted at the UN Summit of the Future. The Pact includes action commitments, agreed by all UN Member States, to:
- Avoid a nuclear arms race;
- Prevent nuclear war;
- Honour and respect the regional nuclear-weapon-free zones;
- Work for the global elimination of nuclear weapons.
The event will discuss opportunities to advance implementation of these commitments, including at the 2026 NPT Review Conference, UN Human Rights Committee and in conjunction with the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
